Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Shooting as Law Enforcement Persist in Manhunt for Gunman.

Two students who died in the weekend's tragic incident on the university campus had tributes paid to them on Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their killer carried on following the release by authorities in Rhode Island of the only individual of interest in the case.

Tributes for Ella Cook

The young woman Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “a wonderful, steady, devout, shining presence”, as stated by the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which honored her memory at a gathering on Sunday.

Her role included second-in-command of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt also posted sympathies publicly, remarking: “There are no words. Remembering her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The other person killed was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his freshman year at the renowned school, family members said.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the foreign office of Uzbekistan.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” his sibling Samira said in a tribute.

Details of the Attack

Nine more persons were wounded in Saturday’s attack in the engineering building of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.

Law enforcement reported by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man arrested in a police operation at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.

He continued, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and go in another, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Public Fear

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, noted: “It is expected to provoke fresh anxiety for our public”.

The gunman opened fire inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, firing more than 40 rounds from a handgun, a police source informed the Associated Press.

Officers that searched the inn seized two handguns and two ammunition clips when the person of interest was detained, as was reported.

The Wounded Victims

Of the nine hurt, one student was discharged from care, mentioned Brown’s president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in grave but unchanging health, and another was critically ill, authorities stated on Sunday.

A private school, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was one of the critically injured.

More Condolences

Tributes were paid to Cook at a memorial in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was a shining example in that institution as well.”

A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was known for her courageous, valiant, and compassionate nature as she served her chapter and fellow classmates,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “profoundly grieved” by the student's death in a statement. “Our profound condolences go out to Mr Umurzokov’s family, companions, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his bright future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about over seven thousand undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, took place amid one of at least 392 shooting incidents recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to data.
