Government Official Says MoD Examining Potential Threat from Vehicles from China, with Staff Told to Refrain from Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been advised to avoid talking about classified matters in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Staff

In a recently aired interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the ministry is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but emphasised that security is a issue in every modern vehicles.

We have a collection of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any car, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and sensible thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

This revelation comes as claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could allow the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

This wider defence environment underscores the significance of strong protocols and caution in every areas of government operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
