New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Study Finds.

The US region famous for its colonial history, maple syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is experiencing a rapid change. Fresh analysis shows that New England is warming more quickly than nearly any other place on the globe.

Unprecedented Pace of Transformation

The rate of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming region of the continental United States, according to the research. The rate of its warming has reportedly accelerated significantly in the past five years.

"The temperature is not only rising, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the study. "It's really accelerated in the past few years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is moving in a new direction, after being relatively stable for millennia."

The analysis positions the New England region among the fastest-warming areas in the world, together with the Arctic and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now heading towards being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.

Analysis Approach and Results

For the study, researchers analyzed three datasets on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis covered the six states of the New England region.

They found that New England has heated up by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the global average, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3°C in the comparable timeframe.

"This represents extremely rapid heating, which is concerning," said the study author.

Key Warming Patterns

  • Nighttime temperatures are rising more quickly than daytime temperatures.
  • Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other seasons.
  • The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being reduced.

Marine Influences and the "Heat Battery"

A primary cause for this unusual accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The global seas are taking in the vast majority of the surplus thermal energy captured by emissions.

In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is pushing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the coastline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.

"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being stored in the sea like a massive storage unit," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that heat."

Consequences on Culture and Weather

Once seen as a mild climate haven, New England has suffered severe climate events in recent years, including devastating flooding and extended dry spells.

The increasing temperatures poses a threat to cherished aspects of local culture:

  • Maple syrup production is being affected by shifting climate conditions.
  • Cold-weather activities are disrupted; an hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been canceled or relocated multiple times due to a lack of ice.
  • Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snow.

"I live just north of Boston and when I moved here in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the local ponds all the time," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely vanished from much of southern New England."
