The Details Known About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 people lost their lives and over 40 were wounded when assailants shot at a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have labeled a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, authorities have confirmed the death toll stands at 16, including one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to medical facilities.

The deceased have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years of age.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the shooting erupted. “He pushed his body up because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister expressed that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was also killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospitals, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with several in a critical state. Those hurt include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

In a message, he described the incident as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I was hit. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
