The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Video review technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the right to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.
A Recent Example
An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Broader Adoption
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was in or out.
Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
